Key Issues

How I Approach Issues

I wanted to give an overview about how I approach nuanced issues and my typical thought process in general.

  • Issues are rarely cut-and-dry. There’s always two or more perspectives that are likely prudent to weigh.

  • Whenever possible, look at the data to tell the most objective story.

  • Whenever possible within that data, look at the sources providing that data and any biases or motivations they may have.

  • For example, a study claiming that smoking has health benefits might not be the most reliable source if organizations linked to big tobacco are the ones producing these claims.

  • When weighing issues and potential policy considerations, I favor outcomes that directly benefit the average Michigan family and not those that favor the wealthy and promise to “trickle down” to everyone else.

No one party nor person is perfect. The closest thing we do have to a perfect system is the scientific method and rigorous study. No matter what person or what party an idea comes from, I want to always know I’ve done my job to research an issue as thoroughly as possible, understand the motivations of those espousing those views, and use as much objective data as possible to arrive at the best possible outcomes for those whom I serve.
